Annual Colloquium

Auckland Colloquium logo

The Cochrane Collaboration holds annual conferences, known as ‘Colloquia’, which are open to everyone. Colloquia are designed to bring people together in one place to discuss, develop and promote our work, and to shape the organisation’s future direction. See a list of previous years' Colloquia here.

This year's Colloquium took place in Auckland, New Zealand from 30 September-3 October. The theme of the 20th Cochrane Colloquium was 'Evidence around the globe'. The schedule included four days of meetings and workshops, along with a full program of scientific sessions, featuring topics such as ‘Rational thinking about health care’, ‘It’s about connections’, and ‘Better global health’.

The host city, Auckland, has consistently been voted one of the world's best lifestyle cities in international surveys. The cosmopolitan city centre is complemented by great escapes no more than half an hour from downtown, including beautiful beaches, hiking trails and accessible islands. In addition to its sunny, temperate climate, Auckland is also home to the world’s largest Polynesian population, and a thriving food and wine culture.

For Cochrane contributors unable to make the trip to Auckland, Colloquium organisers pursued various options to facilitate remote participation. These included: dial-in teleconferencing for selected meetings; video recording of the main scientific presentations; and real-time tweeting of major sessions.

21 September
New Zealand begins DAYLIGHT SAVING at 2:00 am Sunday morning, 30 September. At this time 2:00 am will become 3:00 am. This means you need to put your clocks forward one hour before you go to bed on Saturday night.

2. The registration desk will open at 7:00 am on Sunday 30 September. Please consider that as many of you have early morning meetings there may be a queue to register first thing, so do not leave your registration until 1 minute prior to the meetings commencing.  You can attend the Sunday business meetings without your registration badge.

3. WEATHER: average daytime temperatures are around 16 degrees centigrade with night time lows of around 9 degrees centigrade. You will need a jacket for going out in the evenings. The climate can change very quickly from bright sunshine to rain and back again and so we suggest you pack a compact umbrella to have in your bag at all times. If you are intending on travelling elsewhere in New Zealand you may encounter some very low temperatures, Queenstown recorded a high of 4 degrees last week (the ski slopes are still all operational for those who enjoy winter sports). However, Canterbury has already begun to experience some hot days (mid 20’s) so please pack for changeable weather.

4. For instructions on transport from the airport to your hotel please follow this link

5. Before you travel do not forget to take advantage of the Cochrane library and have a quick look at the very useful reviews on Compression stockings for preventing deep vein thrombosis in airline passengers and Melatonin for the prevention and treatment of jet lag.

6. Workshop sign up is available at the conference website, please remember to sign up for the workshops you wish to attend (some workshops are already full).
